Fred Somers (b. 1942)
Fred Somers was born in Omaha in 1942. He received his BFA from the Univeristy
of Omaha in 1965, his MA in drawing from the University of Iowa in 1967,
and his MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1970. Somers taught
at Carlton College and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota from 1970
to 1975 and held many workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. He has been
painting full time at his farm house studio since 1975. Somers's oil and
pastel pieces reflect themes from the land; he once stated, "It's an
incredible experience to sit and watch the light touch the different parts
of a landscape." Somers is a member of the Pastel Society of America
and shows his work in galleries located in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Colorado,
Arkansas, and Norway.
