John Sparagana (b. 1958)
John Sparagana was born in Rochester, New York in 1958. His family moved
to Oak Park, Illinois when he was seven and at age seventeen, Sparagana
left home to be a writer yet turned to painting instead. He received his
MFA in Painting from Stanford University in 1987 and is currently teaching
art at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Sparagana considers himself to
be a non-representational painter rather than an abstract one and has
this to say about his work, "Art is a kind of metaphor for what I need to
do in my life--that is to mix and balance a spiritual quest and its fairly
abstract relationships with the reality of being in the world."
