THE FIRST NEBRASKANS (1901-1950) produced the first large group of artists who were born in the state. These individuals rapidly made their mark, both here and elsewhere, in the current artistic developments of the day. It was a period in which Mid- America made its first bid for national attention in the work of the Regionalist artists. Nebraska made a contribution of its own in this regard and also had a growing group of artists who allied themselves for the first time to one or another of the modernist movements. Additionally, as the population increased and universities grew and flourished, many artists born elsewhere were attracted to the state and made it their permanent home.
