10 VCD Seniors Exhibit in Walker Gallery - Nov 12, 2008
Ten Visual Communication and Design seniors are exhibiting works in Walker Art Gallery in November 2008.

will be held on Friday, November 14th between 4–6 p.m. at the Gallery.

Senior Show between
November 17–25th, with a reception on November 21st between 4–6 p.m.
The public is invited to attend both receptions and join the department in congratulating
those Design students who plan to graduate this fall.
Pumpkin Carving Contest - October 31, 2008
Dozens of pumpkins lined the hall in the Art and Art History hallways on Halloween for the 13th annual Pumpkin Carving Contest.
Claire Freeburg had the "Best of Show" entry, Ryan Busse carved the pumpkin voted "Ugliest" and Drake Sauer's entry won "Most Creative."

Five VCD students win awards at National Flux Competition - October 22, 2008
Five students in Visual Communication and Design won awards at the Third Annual
Flux Student Design Competition,
sponsored by Shepherd University and
AIGA BlueRidge during October 2008.

Amy Jakobson Pi Movie, and
Brian Margheim Dracula, the Musical
Package design awards went to
Andrea Trew Mondavi and
Steve Wolf The Birds.

VCD Students win 3 National ADDY Awards- *UPDATE*
Eric Nyffeler received gold at the National ADDY Award for his Hydra Black Powder
Fireworks
posters, Brandon Oltman won a National Silver Award for his Kung Pow Paper Co. Paper Sample Book,
and Joe Szczepaniak also picked up a Silver ADDY Award for Rette & Ravette Denim Limited tags in the student
category. The three were honored, along with other 2008 National ADDY Winners at a celebration in Atlanta, Georgia in
June. The ADDY Awards, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation, is the world's largest advertising competition with

Ryan Quincy wins Emmy Award - May 14, 2008
Former UNK design student, Ryan Quincy, is Director of Animation for Comedy Central's
SOUTH PARK. Quincy recently won an Emmy Award for his work for that TV series and was honored by
friends at the Nebraska Coast Connection.
The Holdrege native worked on animated shorts for MAD TV in Hollywood, before joining
Trey Parker and Matt Stone at SOUTH PARK.
Buckle's Cody and Russell to Speak - April 29, 2008
Lori Cody, director of advertising and
Sarah Russell, Art Director for the
Buckle, will give a Graphic Design presentation on May 1 2008 at 7 p.m. in Room
313 in the Fine Arts Building. The two will discuss design projects and their own career development.
On Friday morning, Lory Cody will review the current Senior Exhibition. A reception for the VCD seniors will be held on Friday at 4–6 p.m. in the Walker Art Gallery.
The Buckle, based in Kearney, is a leading retailer of trendy apparel for fashion–conscious young adults. The Company currently operates over 370 stores in 39 states.
Lori Cody has been a Leader on the Buckle’s Marketing Team since 1992. In that year, the Buckle became a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ. She is a believer in relationship marketing—building partnerships and trust with fellow teammates, outside vendors and most importantly—Buckle guests.
She works closely with the Buckle’s in-house creative, merchandising and Internet marketing teams as well as vendors and outside agencies, directing projects that help build the Buckle’s image as a leading specialty retailer offering a diverse selection of branded, private label and trend apparel for young men and women.
Lori Cody has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She has three daughters who fit the Buckle demographic to a tee. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, doing art projects, refinishing furniture and of course…shopping.
Sarah Russell has a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in Graphic from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. She has been a graphic designer for Buckle since 2005 and currently acts as Buckle’s Art Director working on numerous printed and web projects. She develops concepts for promotional creative, shopping bags, credit/gift cards, and signage. Sarah works closely with the Internet marketing and web development teams to maintain image photography and graphics on buckle.com. She also provides insight for visual communication for both in-store and corporate creative that supports Buckle’s image and mission. Sarah and her husband live in Broken Bow and are expecting their first child in June. She enjoys stained glass, gardening, and spending time with her family.
Spring VCD Senior Exhibition opens - April 17, 2008
Five Visual Communication and Design seniors opened their senior exhibition on April 14th. Work by

will be on display in the Walker Art Gallery through May 9th. A reception for the
seniors will be held on Friday, May 2, 2008, from 4–6 p.m. at the gallery. The public is welcome to attend.
Goro-Rapoport award winner at several juried exhibitions - April 10, 2008
UNK Assistant Professor of Art, Victoria Goro-Rapoport, has exhibited in over 150 juried art
shows across the United States since 2000, and has a long list of awards for her work. In 2007 alone, she won
First Place in the 2-D category at the National Juried Art Exhibition, a Honorable Mention at the Bradley
International Print and Drawing Exhibition (Peoria, IL), one of the oldest and most prestigious shows for works
of drawing and print, and the Stella Drabkin Memorial 1st Prize Award of the American Color Print Society in it's
63rd Open Exhibition (Cheltenham, PA). Goro-Rapoport's work was selected for the Best of Show Award at the 6th
Annual Art Inter/National here and abroad Competition of Box Heart Notification (Pittsburgh) and at the Bold
Expressions All Media Exhibition in Carmichael, California. During 2007, she won a dozen other top prizes
and honors in exhibition competitions.
VCD student win 6 ADDY Awards at District Nine Competition- March 27, 2008
Five recent graduates and current students in the VCD program at UNK have been notified that their work was selected for
District Nine level ADDY Awards, and are eligible for entry in the National ADDY
competition. Brandon Oltman received a Gold Award for his Kung Pow Paper Co. Paper Sample Book.
He also received a silver award for The 9 Exported Art Exhibition poster.
Other silver award winners include
Eric Nyffeler for Hydra Black Powder Fireworks poster,
Ashley Stuhr for Cypress Paper Sample Book,
Joe Szczepaniak for Rette & Ravette Denim Limited tags, and

Eleven VCD Students pick up 11 Brass Ring Awards - March 26, 2008
Three UNK VCD student works were selected for "Best of Show" honors at the 2008
Brass Ring Awards.
Anne McGovern won the 2nd place (Silver) Best of Show, for her Sweet Pea tags,
Nathan Hansen took 3rd place (Bronze) Best of Show for his Counter Clothing tags,
and Brandon Oltman was awarded a 6th place (Honorable Mention) Best of Show for his Kung
Pow Paper Sample Book.
Other 2008 Brass Ring Award winners from UNK are Blair Bauer, merit for logo application Stalwart tags;
Brook Carpenter, merit for poster design Refuse to be a Target;
Nate Eskra, bronze for poster design Little Shop of Horrors;
Drew Gourley, merit for logotype 16 Tons;
Brandy Nichols, bronze for poster design Little Shop of Horrors;
Drake Sauer, gold for poster design Dr Jekyll Mr Hyde;
Ashley Stuhr, silver for brochure/annual report Cypress Paper Sample Book; and
Adam Torpin, merit for brochure Swiss Army Knife Instructions.
This is UNK's largest number of awards from the Brass Rings design competition and the VCD program's highest placement in the
"Best of Show" category. Congratulation designers.
Senior Exhibitions begin in Walker Gallery - March 26, 2008
Art seniors will be exhibiting their works in the Walker Art Gallery until the end of the semester. The current show
features works by two seniors graduating with a degree in Art Education, Kasey Moon and
Tara Tracy, along with works by BA Studio Arts senior, Lesley Jones. The show will
run through April 11, 2008. A reception for the artists will be held on April 5th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the gallery.
The public is encouraged to attend the reception and visit Walker Gallery during this show.
UNK Undergraduate Art Exhibition and Reception - February 29, 2008
The 2008 Undergraduate Art Exhibition, sponsored by the UNK Art Society, is open in the Walker Art Gallery in the Fine Arts
Building at the University. A reception for the student exhibitors will be held on Sunday, March 2,
from 2–4 pm in the Gallery. The public is invited to this event. Student award winners will be recognized at the reception
(and on the Art Society page).
VCD students win 26 Nebraska ADDY Awards (Update) - February 29, 2008
UNK VCD student won several awards at the recent Nebraska ADDY Awards. 2007
Graduate, Eric Nyffeler, captured Best of Show plus 2 golds.

Janelle Reed (VCD 2006) had 2 silver for Scorr Marketing,
Curtis Puchunka (VCD 2004) received 2 silvers for the Nebraska Book Co.,
and Karen Koch (VCD 2003) won a silver for Webster Design.
Joel Kreutzer (VCD 2003) had a good evening with 3 gold and 17 silver awards for Archrival,
as did
Jontue Hollingsworth (VCD 2002), who also picked up two special judges
citations along with Best of Show honors for Archrival.
Michelle Sukup (VCD 2004) had 1 silver for Bailey Lauerman-Omaha,
Ben Rowe (VCD 2003) won 2 silvers for Scorr Marketing,
Dave Markes (VCD 2004) took 3 gold and 7 silver award in addition to a special judges citation
for Bailey Lauerman-Lincoln, while
Randall Myers (VCD 2000) took a gold and silver for Bailey
Lauerman_Omaha.
Cindi Coulter (VCD 1998) won 1 silver for Swanson Russell-Lincoln,
Randy Teet (VCD 1994) received 2 gold and 4 silver awards for Ayres Kahler,
Lisa Teet (VCD 1994) took a silver for Swanson Russell-Omaha.
Sean Faden (CA 1989) received 2 gold and six silver awards,
Ron Sack (CA 1988) took 2 gold and 31 silver awards, and
James Strange (CA 1987) won 3 gold and 33 silver awards for Bailey Lauerman-Lincoln.
Joe McQuire (?) was awarded a silver for Swanson Russell-Lincoln,
Greg Daake (CA 1996) received 2 silver awards for Daake Design in Omaha.

UNK VCD students win 23 AIGA Nebraska awards - November 13, 2007
UNK Visual and Communication Design students won three gold medals at the most recent
Nebraska AIGA show in Omaha. Spring 2007 graduate, Eric Nyffeler
received gold for his Hydra Black Powder Fireworks poster. Anne
McGovern took a gold award for her book cover illustration, and Brandon
Oltman won gold for his Kung Pow Paper Co. paper samples book.
The five silver award winners were Eric Nyffeler for packaging, Ashley Stuhr for Misc. book, Jaime Flores for direct mail, Brandon Oltman for a poster, and Anne McGovern for poster design. VCD students also won fifteen bronze awards at the AIGA show. Bronze winner are: Brook Carpenter, Cassi Ellenwood (2), Nate Hansen, Jennifer Karr, Anne McGovern, Brandon Oltman (3), Joe Szczepaniak, Adam Torpin (3), and Andrea Trew (2). Pumpkin Content - October 31, 2007
Over sixty pumpkins lined the Art Department halls on Wednesday at the annual Pumpkin Contest. Visitors voted on the best, most creative, and ugliest.

Malcolm Grear exhibition reception held Sunday - October 28, 2007
An exhibition of identity marks by world renowned identity designer, Malcolm Grear, was
held in the Walker Art Gallery from September 24 to October 28, 2007. Copies of the artist's book
Inside/Outside: From the Basics to the Practice of Design were given as door prizes at
the reception held October 28th. See

Professor Schuessler awarded Pratt-Heins for Service. - Aug 31, 2007
Professor Richard Schuessler was cited for his art direction on three books published by UNK, Prairie Mosaic, The Presidential Visit of William Jefferson Clinton and From the Beginning—the UNK centennial book. Prairie Mosaic was chosen for Library Journal's "Notable Document List" as one of the top 25 international works of 2000. The UNK centennial book earned a regional Silver ADDY Award.
Pratt-Heins Award winners must demonstrate consistent, outstanding service to UNK students, to the university, to education in general, and to significant state, regional or national education programs. Pratt-Heins Trustee, Tom Tye II, said "this year's recipient has given countless hours to UNK, as well as to local and statewide organizations."

Over the summer, new art tables were installed in
302. Additional shelving was added to the print room. Design students will find several
new computers along with upgrades to Adobe
CS3 Premium suite,
QuarkXPress 7.3, and
Final Cut Pro.
Walls in the hallway should be covered with a new
display surface soon.
Two new faculty members will begin teaching this Fall; John Stanko is new in graphic design; Ronald McIntosh will teach Secondary Art Education classes.
"Destruktion" in Art - July 5, 2007
The hallway ceilings in the Art wing of FAB have been peeled away to reveal bundles of snaking cables, undulating ducts,
conduits and pipes. All has been laid bare in preparation for sprinkler installation that will bring the building up to
code this summer.
Some recently painted walls have also fallen victim to the incessant march of progress. Stripped of the pitted and distressed display boards, the halls will be covered in carpet by Fall. The new surface will provide a more attractive display area, while reducing noise in the long concrete corridor. See photos.

Studio Art Senior Exhibition - April 6, 2007
Three studio art students will exhibit their works from April 2 through April 13, 2007 in the Walker Art Gallery. Ceramics, prints,
and animation stills plus a 3-D animation by graduating seniors Jesse Jacobs, Abigail Om, and Michael Williams will be on display between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm weekdays. A reception will be held on Saturday, April 7th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

Student Art Exhibit Awards Reception held Feb. 18th - February 18, 2007
The UNK Art Society Annual Undergraduate Student Art Exhibition is now underway in the Walker Art Gallery located in the Fine Arts Building. The show will be in the Gallery through March 11, 2007.
The Reception and Awards Ceremony will be Sunday, February 18th between 2:00–4:00 p.m.
This year, seventy-five pieces were selected from over 150 entries for the exhibition. Guest juror, Tim Guthrie, of Creighton
University selected the "Best of Show" entry along with several other award winners.
VCD students win gold and silver Nebraska ADDYs - February 8, 2007
Students in Visual Design and Communication took four gold and nine silver awards at the 14th annual Nebraska ADDY Show.
Adam Torpin received two gold and a silver award. Gabriello Re took one gold and two silver awards.
Casey Stokes picked up a gold as well. Brandon Oltman won three silver awards, Dawn Wallinger received two, and Bob Heiden captured silver at the awards show and awards banquet held in Lincoln on February 3rd.
UNK Art Faculty Exhibition at MONA from Jan. 27 to April 8 - January 28 2007
This biennial exhibition at the Museum of Nebraska Art features recent artwork by current and emeriti faculty members of the University of Nebraska Kearney's Art and Art History Department. These artists work in a variety of media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramic, and mixed media.
The exhibition is made possible by a generous gift from the Rob and Carol Cope Charitable Trust.
VCD students win design awards at AIGA Nebraska. - January 19, 2007
Students in the visual communications and design program at the University of Nebraska at Kearney took home Best of Show and several other awards at the 2006 AIGA Nebraska show in November.
The America Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is a professional association for communication design. The Nebraska chapter of AIGA sponsors the annual design competition for practicing artists and designers and students. Each year, the Nebraska AIGA chapter selects three design judges from across the United States to juror the competition.
Casey Stokes won Best of Show honors for his Spoils of War: Desolation poster and for his interactive World War II video. Three other posters in his Spoils of War poster series; Annihilation, Invasion, and Oppression received silver awards. A fifth poster entitled Opposition took bronze.
University of Nebraska students received four gold awards. Adam Torpin took two gold honors for his Rock Star Clothing Tag System (packaging) and for his San Fermin Festival poster. Andrea Maly won gold for her VCD Senior Show System (misc). Gabriello Re took gold for his Arcadia Organic Tea (packaging).
In addition to the three silver awards picked up by Casey Stokes, the following UNK students won silver: Ashley Stuhr for Adam & Eve Clothing Tags (packaging), Dawn Wallinger for her Elan Clothing (packaging), and Gabriello Re for his Fleas Navidog (invitation/announcement).
Adam Torpin won two bronze awards for pieces entitled My Show Don't Stink (poster) and Pike Place Fish Market (logo/identity). Bob Heiden was awarded a bronze for Pacific Venture (packaging), Dawn Wallinger took bronze for Pike Place Fish Market (logo/identity), and Gabriello Re received a bronze for Plug Coffee (packaging). Student entries were sponsored by the University of Nebraska at Kearney with support from the following businesses: Marathon Press, Morris Press, and Archrival Studio.
In the professional category, a bronze went to UNK faculty, Mark Hartman, for the Platte Valley Brewery (logo/identity).
